About USBC

United South Broadway is a non-profit Community Development Corporation that works within older historic neighborhoods of Albuquerque to address affordable housing opportunities, commercial revitalization, crime prevention and youth development. Neighborhood Revitalization depends on all of these in order to improve and/or maintain the communities'' quality of life.

History

The  South Broadway established a neighborhood association over 35 years ago.  Like César Chavez, this neighborhood has built on the  strength of its history and  diverse community members to over-come struggle and work for change.  The South Broadway Neighborhood Association has worked closely in this struggle with the United South Broadway Corp., a non-profit community development corporation.

South Broadway was once a busy and bustling residential and commercial district that helped build the cultural, social and physical foundations of Albuquerque.  This neighborhood continues to reflect settlement patterns of Albuquerque’s past and present.   Historically South Broadway was the center for Albuquerque’s African American population.  Today, due to increasing in-migration, this neighborhood represents the five prominent cultural groups of Albuquerque; African American, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, and White.

As has happened with many smaller city neighborhoods across the United States, competition with malls and larger shopping markets, and sprawl development has proved nearly fatal to this historic district.  Yet the neighborhood continues to persevere and thrive.

Ten years ago the South Broadway neighborhood was a center for the buying and selling of illegal drugs without consequence.   Much of this activity was carried out by non-residents.  Tired of the drugs and violence, and with a desire to restore the neighborhood as a place to raise families and conduct business, residents came together.  With the help of USBC, this area has been at the heart of award winning and ground breaking programs such as the Peace in the Streets Campaign, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, and the MainStreet program.

These Programs are working to build neighborhood gateways, cultural corridors, alternative schools for young people, and cultural centers. These programs, which are community based,  have come together to revitalize the residential and business communities. Pride in history and multiculturalism is reflected in all aspects of these neighborhoods, through its business, its residential areas, and murals and façade improvements which include traditional symbols from many cultures.

The Cesar Chavez struggle for justice and dignity reflects much of the work of these neighborhoods and the USBC.  With innovative projects like the Cesar Chavez Memorial Gateway, USBC continues to do what it has always done:  build upon the community’s diversity to improve and thrive.
