The overall goal of the neighborhood commercial revitalization is to create an environment that is conducive to small business that can provide local residents with basic goods and services needed without residents having to drive outside the neighborhood. Neighborhood commercial revitalization also helps neighborhood owned and operated business establishments to attract more customers, increase the amount of business transactions, increase neighborhood wealth by allowing local dollars to be spent in the neighborhood, and finally, create employment opportunities for local residents. To address these issues the City of Albuquerque has supported USBC's Commercial Facade Improvement Program. The facade improvement program addresses the commercial business districts where they exist in older historic neighborhoods of our city. The program provides design assistance in addition to actual construction assistance in the form of grants and deferred matching loans. To protect the public and private investments made through the facade program, USBC established the MainStreet program. The last commercial facade funding that provided funding to small businesses in the federally designated Pocket of Poverty neighborhoods, North 4th Street and Loc Candelaria's Village created approximately 94 jobs and helped retain another 139 jobs.
The Four Point MainStreet approach is a successful revitalization program networking over 1200 communities nationally, building the capacity of traditional and historic neighborhood districts. The program develops skills and leadership in local communities based on the Four Point MainStreet Approach.
The New Mexico MainStreet Program fosters economic development in the state by supporting local MainStreet downtown revitalization organizations. The program provides resources, organizing/advocacy, training and services that enhance local heritage and stimulate the economic vitality.
As an active participant in the MainStreet Program USBC and the businesses that USBC has engaged in the work have won the following awards:
